Transportation to and around Austin

Rental Car 

Check out these weekend special rates and book directly with Enterprise Rent-A-Car.  On many weekends, Enterprise has economy cars starting as low as $13.00 per day plus tax.

Dining 

Romeo’s   Located near downtown, just south of the river near Zilker Park--about 15-20 minutes drive from Habitat Suites.  A delightful and cozy romantic Italian restaurant. 

La Fonda San Miguel Interior Mexican food in a beautiful indoor garden atmosphere. Open in the evenings only, except for Sunday Brunch, which is especially nice.  Located about 5 minutes drive from Casa De Luz on North Loop Blvd. -- just west of Burnet Road.

The Oasis overlooks Lake Travis, about 30-40 minutes drive west of downtown Austin or Habitat Suites.  On their home page, they write, “The Oasis is consistently named one of the Top 10 Austin Area Attractions" by the Austin Convention and Visitor's Bureau and by Texas Guides' - Austin and Hill Country Guide”.  They are best known for their view over Lake Travis and outdoor patio.

Casa De Luz  serves some of Austin's most inspired and healthful vegetarian/vegan dining in a community center and garden setting. Here, you have the choice to meet other diners at community tables or be secluded at a smaller table or on the deck.  Located near Zilker Park, close to the intersection of South Lamar and Barton Springs Road. 

Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas   Here you can enjoy dinner and a movie at the same time!  Several Austin locations, with the one at Alamo Village, 2700 W Anderson Lane, about 5 minutes drive from Habitat Suites.

 

Entertainment and Shopping

Esther’s follies Shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday Nights.  An Austin original of song, dance, magic, comedy and much more.  Not to be missed!

Capital Cruises Day and evening cruises on Town Lake. You can rent private boats of various sizes with quiet electric motors or join others on a larger paddle wheeler.  Perfect for a romantic picnic or dinner cruise! 

Austin Steam Train  Check the website for their schedule. They have a sweetheart schedule for Valentines Day plus twilight runs several times each year. 

Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas   Here you can enjoy dinner and a movie at the same time!  Several Austin locations, with the one at Alamo Village, 2700 W Anderson Lane, about 5 minutes drive from Habitat Suites.

Highland Mall  Located just across the street from Habitat Suites. 

 

Outdoor Activities and Parks

Barton Springs Pool Austin’s crown jewel sits in the center of Zilker Park. Open year around, its 68 degree water feels ice cold in the summer and warm on the cold winter days.

The Congress Avenue Bridge Bats From about April to November you can see the amazing Mexican free tail bats at sunset for free from the bridge or on the shore.  Capital Cruises (above) also offers evening cruises where you view the bats from your boat as they spiral out from under the Congress Street Bridge for their night long insect feeding.

Bicycle Rental Bicycle Sport Shop is conveniently located in central Austin, just south of the Town Lake and very near the Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail (link below).

Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail runs about 10 miles around the downtown lake. The most popular starting point and parking is on either side of the footbridge at the west end of the trail loop, near Austin high school, and under the MoPac expressway, also called Loop 1.  Going east for the footbridge you have several options of length and will see Zilker Park and downtown. Mount Bonnell Park One of the highest points in the city overlooking the Colorado River/Lake Austin. Located less than 15 minutes drive from either Habitat Suites or downtown Austin. There are tables and areas for picnics, with a rocky surface—no grass. You’ll need to either climb steps or walk up a gravel path to the top, so wear comfortable shoes.
